Spring 2023

People who wear glasses often purchase a new pair every 2 years. Under the lens of sustainability, why is it that we seek newly produced glasses instead of exploring greener solutions to sight?

Peer is a senior capstone project I had created under the school’s constraint of “Sustainability”. From consumer segmentation to the creation of a branded physical exhibit, I sought to explore the greener options of an industry that frequently escapes criticism.

The current state

Overconsumption is casual and expected in the industry of eyewear. No one is aware of sustainable practices that might exist or care about it in this segment of healthcare/fashion.

The problem

If alternative, green eyewear options exist, it is not well known. Production of eyewear is also incredibly massive, undoubtedly contributing to landfills and waste.
How might we make sustainable practices in eyewear favorable to a larger audience?

The solution

Giving a space for consumers to
resell their spectacles (in a fashionable way) rescinds guilt and normalizes repair and reuse.

Think ThredUp, Poshmark, etc.

Understanding
the issue

Before the brand was created, infographic posters and user personas helped inform what I was tackling and who this solution would be helping. Research and interviews were conducted shortly after this stage.

A Personality for Peer

Once the general direction was laid out, I developed a brand that felt fun and friendly. This is to reinforce positivity and warmth while also retaining a sense of professionalism/trustworthiness.

This branding was utilized in multiple avenues of print and digital:
